Shakespeare In The Hills

"...let your own discretion be your tutor: suit the action to the word, the word to the action; with this special: o'erstep not the modesty of nature: for any thing so overdone is from the purpose of playing, whose end, both at the first and now, was and is, to hold, as 'twere, the mirror up to nature; to show virtue her own feature, scorn her own image, and the very age and body of the time his form and pressure. The prevailing attitude at the camps is well expressed by Benedick in "Much Ado About Nothing",

"...man is a giddy thing and this is my conclusion"

Giddiness, frivolity, a deeper appreciation of Shakespeare and just plain fun are guaranteed!

This year's camp:
  • Two Gentlemen of Verona Camp is July 26th-August 6th (ages 9-17) with performances On August 6-7. Please see our brochure for details.• Registration is open! Application

Cost is $450 for each two week session. Some need based scholarships available.

Be advised: friendships hatched at Shakespeare Camp may continue to grow and prosper long after camp has finished!

We start by cold reading the play on day one. Actors usually receive their roles on day two. Then we spend days three through eight on intensive scene work (rehearsals) before bringing the show to the Plainfield Town Hall for all day rehearsal and first performance on Day 10 (the final Friday) and the final performance on Day 11 (the final Saturday @ 2 PM). Camp days start at 10:00 AM at the Old Meeting House, a beautiful church in East Montpelier, VT. Naomi opens each day with breath and bodywork (yoga for performers.) Although we perform on the last weekend, camp is not in session Saturday and Sunday in between weeks.

We take frequent breaks to play roof ball and pickup soccer. Naomi and Tom keep us on task, making sure we bring a pretty impressive show to the Town Hall, but the overall atmosphere is easy going, supportive, and downright giddy much of the time.

The camp experience is an immersion: in a play, in a team of actors and directors, and in the time and language of Elizabethan England.

Actors provide their own lunches and snacks. Parents get to know each other and tend work out a lot of car-pooling.

Here's a freebee! This is Hamlet's full set of instructions to the actors, which is the most concise, beautiful and correct acting lesson ever set down
